On board naval vessels, when you hear the screech of the bosun’s pipe and a booming voice roar “Now hear this”, it means Pay Attention! Listen Up! It’s usually followed by important information like Orders of the Day or a call to Battle Stations which are critical to the ship’s mission and its survival.
Psalm 85 is such a “Now Hear This” message. Only in this case it’s not only critical, but ignoring it could be spiritually fatal. God tells his people to listen carefully and don’t return to worldly foolishness. Salvation is near! Don’t foul up your chance!
Advent is the season leading to the birth of that salvation, Jesus Christ. Pay attention to the spiritual message of Christmas – not the worldly one. “Now hear this” from the very angels singing to us of his peace and love.
